July 20, 2024

I had my first radio interview last week on a local station, KOOP 91.7 FM, on a show called Writing on the Air.

These are some of my reflections:

My wife listened to the interview that evening while I walked Logan. When I came back, she told me, with a big smile on her face, that she really enjoyed it. I haven’t listened to it, but I have considered how I would have answered the questions better or expanded on certain things. Then again, I’m a writer, not a speaker.

Tim Ferriss posted on Twitter:
”It is far more lucrative and fun to leverage your strengths instead of attempting to fix all the chinks in your armor. The choice is between multiplication of results using strengths or incremental improvement fixing weaknesses that will, at best, become mediocre. Focus on better use of your best weapons instead of constant repair.”

So, this is my way of focusing on my strengths rather than trying to fix my weaknesses. My spoken English is not perfect, and I’m learning that having a few minutes to talk about broad topics is probably not my ideal setting. It takes my overly analytical, overthinking brain some time to gather my ideas and speak them coherently. Still, it was a good experience that I’m eager to repeat.

These are some of the questions I remember and how I would answer them if it were a written interview:

1) What would you tell someone who wants to become a writer?

I said: “Tell the truth.”

This is a fine answer, but without context, it feels incomplete. I meant to say that first, you must choose what kind of writer you want to be. Is your aim to be an overnight sensation and sell as many books as possible? If the answer is yes, you should take courses on outlining and closely watching market analytics. You should write to market and carefully craft a product that sells. Nothing wrong with that.

But, if you aim to become an artist, a writer of novels that stand the test of time, then telling the truth is the only way. Even in fiction, the soul of the story is truth. The difference between fiction and nonfiction is that in fiction, the truth is dressed in fantasy or fantastical events. It’s imaginary people carrying out real settings and having real conversations. The best books in history are ones that don’t shy away from certain truths that the author saw coming from a mile away. 1984, Farehtheit 451, Brave New World, etc., are books ahead of their time by authors brave enough to tell the truth, at whatever the cost. As artists, our job is not to be nice, to pander to the crowd, or to be liked. Our job is to tell the truth.

How you measure success is important.

2) What is the 444 series about?

I said: “About four archangels trapped in our universe and looking for a way out.”

I would add that it’s about four archangels trapped in our universe that are taking extreme and, sometimes, deadly measures to get out and overtake the Ancestor’s throne. At a high level, it’s a race to power, with whatever means necessary. Of course, there is a lot more to the series. I didn’t even mention the main characters. You will have to read it to find out how it unfolds.

3) What is the hardest part about selling my books?

I said: “Since I don’t write to market, the hardest part is explaining my books.”

This is correct. The more complete answer would be simply: “Marketing.”

Whenever I hear or think about that word, I think of the great authors in history. I imagine J. D. Salinger setting up a booth and chatting up potential readers at an event or Hemingway gathering meme pictures for a social media post. It’s a somewhat ridiculous scenario, but this is where we’re at. Would they thrive today if any of them were starting out right now? That’s an interesting question.

My difficulties in selling my books are the same difficulties most authors face: there’s just too much stuff out there competing for people’s attention. Some authors believe it’s just a matter of numbers. The more books they have out, the more chances they have of being discovered and the more books they’ll sell. So there’s an army of people who are pumping out books as if they were story factories. On the popularity front, I find it impossible to compete with these people, so I have to out-compete them with quality.

This means that it takes me about six months to a year to complete the first draft of a novel. Then comes editing, cover designing, re-writing, etc. By the time I release it, I end up with a quality story that gets lost in the soup of word vomit that is the publishing world.

Not only that, but books are pumped out with such speed, such carelessness that the reader has gotten used to a certain type of story. I have read a few modern books lately, all of them with an increasingly easier vocabulary and sentences that are so close to nonfiction books that I often wonder what happened to prose and subtlety. Lately, it feels more like I’m reading a blockbuster movie or a comic book than a novel. It’s fine for entertainment value, but as soon as I read the final page, the book exits my brain as fast as it entered it. I’m left the same as I was before I read it. Unchanged. I don’t know what that means for the literary world or my books. It comes back to the question of what kind of author you want to be. Sometimes, the best you can do is hop off the machine, watch it from afar, and enjoy the calmness of solid ground. I’ll write the best books I can write, each one a snapshot of my journey. Eventually, someone will notice.

4) Do you outline your books?

I said: “No.”

I trust my subconscious to come up with better symbolism and themes than my conscious mind ever could. So, I try to abstain from any deep planning of my stories. I do flesh out ideas before I start writing, and I’ll often leave little notes when I finish my writing session so that the next day, I can come to it knowing what needs to happen next in broader terms. I leave enough room for tangents, knowing that if I sleep well, my brain will take the story in a completely different direction. That’s what happened in Messengers Rising, where my brain came up with the idea for Istahar’s back story out of nowhere. That wasn’t planned at all, and it’s my favorite part of that book.

Writing is playtime for me. If I were to worry about the plot, beats, archetypes, and the hero’s journey at a conscious level, it would become a job, a chore. I would be like a creative chef with an idea for a dish who ended up flipping burgers at a fast food restaurant because someone told him those two spices could never go together.

When I used to make music, I knew the basic chords of a guitar, but everything else was made up on the spot. I didn’t know what any of the notes and chords were called, and I didn’t care. It sounded cool, aggressive, beautiful, calming, or whatever emotion I had at the moment. I had been playing make-believe all my life and enjoyed it. I want to continue creating in the same fashion. I might sometimes know the beginning and the ending, but everything in between is a mystery to be uncovered.

5) what is your writing routine?

I said: “Write first thing in the morning before the day gets away from you.”

Yes, but also: I sit in the same chair next to a window because sunlight puts me in a good mood, and I listen to the same instrumental music because lyrics are distracting. I use noise-canceling headphones because my neighbors have the loudest car in the world. And I stay there for two to three hours and give myself a good writing opportunity. Whatever happens, happens. Sometimes that means one sentence, other times multiple chapters.

I write before checking my emails and before logging on to social media. I need my brain fresh and uncorrupted by current events. I sometimes turn off my phone, watch, and any device with notifications. The only things I might do before writing are eating a protein and fat-rich breakfast, feeding and walking my dog, exercising, and drinking green tea because I found coffee puts me in a weird manic state where I’m too jittery and often leads to bad decisions. Clarity is paramount.

Sometimes, I might journal right when I get out of bed. As mentioned in The Artist’s Way, morning pages are a great way to silence the monkey brain.

That’s it for now. If I remember more questions, I’ll add them here.

The way I see it going

1) Human comes up with the idea, execution, and use.

2) Human creates AI.

3) Human comes up with idea, asks AI to execute it.

4) Human asks AI for ideas.

5) Human asks AI what he should ask it.

6) AI rules the world.

These fears always come up whenever there are leaps in technological advance

Sure. The internet was the previous one. The difference is the internet used to be a glorified yellow pages. To this day it hasn’t destroyed storefronts because some things you just cannot shop online. Most people prefer person to person courses, and you can’t go to the gym online. Sure, there are alternatives fro the introverted and the busy, but one thing can never replace the other. It’s not like an online course is trying to fool everyone into thinking it’s a traditional classroom. Everyone knows.

The problem with AI is that the software is pointing towards being indistinguishable with humans. Add quantum computing into the mix, a marriage between hardware and software, and who knows what it will be able to do. Publishing houses are already giving out contracts for so called AI authors, or people who typed in an idea into AI and wrote a novel. It is still crude to the trained eye, but before you say anything just think about how long we have had AI, really, as a global thing. A year? It is already writing books, creating art, analyzing data, and spewing out diagnosis and treatments.

Do not fear

It is great technology when put to good use. It can be greatly beneficial. It will, for sure, disrupt many industries and will face a lot of opposition. Mostly, I believe it will impact the lower and middle class the most. People who can’t afford certain services will go to AI to get things done. Translation of documents, finding treatment for illnesses, a personal assistant, trip planners, and so on.

It gets into a gray area when it also threatens to take over the creative industry. What effect will it have down the road, ten, twenty years from now, when we start getting rid of artists. Are the tear jerking, hair raising arts we find so moving just a distraction? Will humanity finally raise their eyes to the stars and find an anchor to pull our race into our next stage?

As someone attempting to change careers from engineer to writer, I get both sides of the argument. In a sense, I am amazed by the technological advancements in such a small period of time, but in another, I am scared shitless about having to eventually give up on something I love dearly because no human will be able to compete with a machine pumping out millions of books a day.

Will it be like the CD revolution, where now people are starting to buy vinyl again? Will books become retro? I don’t know.

One thing I do know is AI needs some type of regulation. If anything, to protect ourselves. At the state it is now, it only copies and compiles information already available online and presents it to the user in a simple way. But people forget that technology improves, and it is a race to the top. The prize at the peak? Money, usually. The worst thing about money is that it blinds you if you’re not careful.

Somewhere between stage 5 and 6 is where I think the path forward will reveal itself. Either humans will become lazy and uninspired, pressing buttons for a robot to come and bring them stuff (think The Fifth Element), or we will use the technology in our favor and become interplanetary.

We can ask AI to design the perfect rocket, the perfect factory, the perfect engine, the perfect astronaut suit. For this though, it needs to come up with new shit, not just compile what is already there because this requires new discoveries. So we will need to teach AI how to run experiments, how to observe and come up with conclusions. At this point, it will probably have its own laboratories, factories, and test centers. What will humans be doing during this? From workers, to supervisors, to mere observers.

There is an equal chance for the future to be either bright or bleak.

One thing is true: we need better humans capable of handling what’s coming.

We need better parents to raise the next generation.

We need to stop wasting time arguing about inconsequential things.

What will you do today? Right now after reading this, to do your small part for a better future?

This is what works for me to stay productive when I haven’t had enough sleep. Everyone is different, and has a different level of energy and sleep requirements. For some people, pumping caffeine works. But the goal is to move as close to the ideal circadian rhythm as possible; i.e. wake up at or before sunrise, wind down at sunset.

Front Loading

The secret is front loading the most important task of the day. Get it done when you still have energy, as little as it may be. If you drink coffee or green tea, it’s best to use that bump in energy before it runs out. Do not keep consuming caffeine to keep the energy going. If you do, it will mess up your sleep cycle and tomorrow you’ll feel even worse.

Do not work heavy machinery when you have not slept enough. By front loading the most important task, I mean tasks that do not require a well rested brain’s full concentration. As a writer, I write my 500-1000 new words as early in the day as possible. I cook breakfast and make a serving of coffee, and get to work. What really helps the brain use the little energy it has, is to put on noise cancelling headphones with some instrumental music or frequency beats. 20Hz seems to work for me. I tend to get very easily distracted by background noise when I haven’t slept well. My dog moving around, or a neighbor’s mower will set me off.

Second tier

Then, I move to my second tier level. These are tasks that require less energy, creative or physical. Using my writer example again, this is editing, checking the status of my beta readers, posting on social media, researching, and catching up on emails.

Lunch

Usually, at around this time you should take a break for lunch. Usually, when we have a less than perfect sleep, we will crave the worst food possible. Fight this urge. What you need is protein, fats, and drink only water. Avoid sugar like the plague. Avoid processed foods. These tenants you should probably follow every single day, but the less we sleep the more inclined we are to make bad choices, specially with things that are right at our fingertips, like food.

The afternoon tiredness

If you want to and can, a 15-30 minute nap is advisable here. But only for that amount of time and only before 3:00 PM. Yoga Nidra helps here, as well.

At this time it is good to do even less intense tasks. Walking the dog, watching a short video, journaling, reading, drinking plenty of water. If you get any ideas for writing, leave a note for tomorrow. Careful to not get lost in binging too much of one thing. If you do that, you will be snoozing before you know it, and you will spend another insomniac night.

Conclusion

It’s not the end of the world. You didn’t get enough sleep. You see your sleep tracking apps and it says 4 hours and all the circles are red. Don’t despair. Not all is lost. Follow these simple guidelines and bend them to your liking. Always think forward and make decisions today which will make tomorrow better.

I just found this out this morning. Dean Wesley Smith’s approach to writing. What he says aligns very well to my own thinking. If you need awards and acclaims in order to listen to someone, he has written 200+ books, NYT bestseller and all the awards.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypG4iuJ9_ck

Write into the dark. Start writing without really plotting or knowing where the story is going to go, and let your characters tell the story for you. Once you finish, don’t rewrite. Sure, show it to your alpha reader, and fix any typos or errors, but don’t get stuck in rewrites. Put it out there on the market and leave it there.

Check out his books, but specially Heinlein’s Rules: Five Simple Business Rules for Writing

Just write.

“These are the strategies to get more sales,” says one online guru while promoting his wifi business. “Five easy things to increase traffic to your site,” says another. There are all kinds of flavors of the same thing. It boils down to “I will teach you how to sell.” Or “Learn how to make money.” It’s hard to look away and not click on titles such as these, if you are lucky enough to find them in front of a paywall, instead of behind it. One thing’s for sure, there is a paywall somewhere. And sometimes the billboard type titles are so enticing that even the paywall does not dare to stop us. And we plow through it, wallet first.

If you are reading this article, you are proving my point, though I will not sell you anything, or teach you how to sell, not in the conventional way. There is an infinite amount of resources for that already. And they are effective. Well, it depends on how you measure it, anyway.

Stop to think

We never really stop to think about what we are really doing. And fare enough, we have bills to pay and mouths to feed. And after a few months of trying things out the “right” way, that is to say, full of integrity and trying to provide as much value as possible, we start hearing the creepy calls of the dark side. We start noticing a trend in our sales reports: they all look like a box of donuts, big black zeroes with blinding gaping holes. And we shift from creating so much value that people will eventually find us, to transforming into a marketing or ads expert, trying to make ourselves discoverable to the mechanical claws of the algorithm. We dismiss improving our craft, and try our luck exchanging our time at the marketing school slot machines. Our products, blogs, YouTube channel, and even artistic prowess suffer the negligence of our focus, as our virtual door to door salesman skills increase. The once amusing twitter threads about sales that demand your urgency become your daily dose of essential vitamins. You, too, begin creating sales that will end in 5 hours … 2 hours… 1 more left…

“Urgency and scarcity tactics can be useful for increasing your store’s sales. When your store uses scarcity, your customer perceives that there’s a limited supply of goods, which compels them to purchase the product.”

— Nicole Martins Ferreira, oberlo

An article titled “THE BEST URGENCY AND SCARCITY TACTICS TO INCREASE YOUR SALES”. All caps.

And who can argue with new greens entering your bank account? If money is not an appropriate measure of success, what is? When we start, we believe, truly, that only the corrupt can run a business prioritizing money instead of quality, and then we find ourselves as rich and as corrupt, and we understand how this could happen to anyone.

It takes but a matter of months for the right time to create your own flavor of the course ice cream. Imagine the internet as a series of buildings, with different meetings happening within. You enter one of the buildings, a seller’s meeting. “Passive income is the way,” you chant along with the league of shadows. At the end of such gathering, they pass packets of empty scoops around, one for each attendee, and the leader sends you out into the wild. “Remember, never take off the mask,” he says. It’s not a pyramid scheme, by the way, those died a long time ago. But if you bring people in, they will like you more. Maybe you’ll receive a 3D holographic invitation to the raddest club in town.

Come, I’ll teach you how to confuse – I mean convert

So you should convert people into customers. All hail the magic number of conversion rate. When you are looking for a specific item to purchase, you may see a line of booths selling the exact same thing, but one booth calls you in. It speaks to you in an ancient language that you have never heard, but still you understand it with deep intensity. Most of the time you can’t really tell why. If you are not yet aware, it has been figured out. Specific color combinations, expert copywriting, charging you triple the amount for the same product, value perception. It is a science, the Consumer Psychology they call it.

Honesty in buying

You’ll do anything to avoid buyer’s remorse, or worse being embarrassed that you were scammed into something. But don’t worry, that is why humans created Choice-supportive bias or post-purchase rationalization to convince ourselves that what we spent our money, AKA our time, on was exactly the right choice, just because. We tell ourselves there was no way the situation could have gone any other way. I have family members who have thrown thousands of dollars down the drain, have been duped and scammed out of their noses, and burned by companies, yet still go back to said companies with rationalizations such as “Oh, they messed up as humans but their product is good,” or, “I just got a bad batch.” There are a lot of reasons to lie awake at night, and this might just be one of them. It is wise to always be brutally honest with yourself and practice sitting alone for a long time in the face of discomfort. That is when and where your true thoughts are allowed to emerge.

The risks that accrue to you for speaking the truth are so much more minimal than the risks that accrue to you from deceiving yourself and other people that they’re not even in the same universe…speak the truth!

Jordan Peterson

Moths to a bright light

And what about that little voice, gut feeling or whatever you want to call it, when you sense something about a person? Maybe it is an influencer, a creator, a YouTuber, someone that is inserting thoughts through your headphones, your ear canal, and straight into your brain. There is something about their body language, about how they speak, that you feel you shouldn’t trust. Still, if their skills as a salesman are advanced enough, you will be compelled to throw money their way, and feel gross about it during every step of the checkout process.

Honesty in selling

I, and probably you, have bought products from great sellers, and from not so great sellers. That is, people who are, or not, great at selling their products. But by far, my favorite way to purchase a product is from a person that gives away so much of himself, and shares so much value, that I go out of my way to search for his products and buy them. In a way, you become a mini shark in a made up version of shark tank, and you invest in the person, and not merely on a no-face shiny product. These buying experiences are not only fulfilling, and joy inducing, they also leave a great, non GMO, all natural aftertaste, as opposed to the artificial, over produced, compounded taste, and you will not only become a return customer, but you will find yourself talking about the product incessantly. You become a street marketer for a person, at no cost to them. But this can only happen as an accidental effect from the deep obsession on their part with whatever skill they have, and a page or paragraph with “their story” written by a copywriter does not have the same effect.

Lessons learned from the village elders

I recently discovered a woodworker that builds all of his projects by hand. That is, by using hand tools. He is an older gentleman, and he has a lot of videos spanning back a decade. If you were to squish all of the videos together and put them in a sack, you would have a bag as heavy as gold. This person completely put himself and all of his knowledge out there, for free. And this is a well renowned person in his craft, with clients of the highest ranks in various industries around the world. He could probably sell you anything, but chooses not to. In his blog, you find articles that are not perfect or pristine, with countless orthographic errors, but are still a joy to read because his knowledge and passion ooze all over his writing. You can almost feel his desire to share and teach. And you feel compelled to support him in any way that you possibly can. He makes it very hard for you to give him your money, still you try even harder. You subscribe to his YouTube, use the links on his website, follow his advice, and all because you truly believe it when he says “This should be free for everyone.”

Conclusion

You can buy all the courses of the world, and become a master seller, and take a shot of tequila every time your bank account goes up, and fall asleep drunk with your mouse on the refresh button. You can convince yourself it is the stamp of a successful person. The comfortable cushions of your sports car reiterate it, and so does the expensive food, and the empty hugs from people you call friends, who think they can become just as rich by osmosis. But as I continue growing and learning, I have to conclude that the best sellers in the world are the ones that don’t try to sell me anything at all. The ones that are so incredible at what they do, dedicated themselves so much to a thing that their value can scarcely be contained within the barriers of their skin. And the joy they have in what they do goes beyond what can be measured by physical objects. The joy sticks to you like strawberry marmalade on a new white shirt. You feel good not only buying from them, but finding on your own the way to transfer your money, AKA time, to them. At this point it stops being a relationship of buyers and sellers, but a relationship of time transferrers. Exchanging bits of life between one another. Paying for something thus becomes a statement of gratitude. A way to say, “Thank you for existing”. And what is a better measure than that?

Do you want to become a great seller? Become the best at something, instead.

Start by fixing your evening and morning routines.

How to meditate properly is a question most beginners interested in the practice might wonder. I used to wonder this myself, and I got neck deep in apps like Headspace, Calm, and Insight Timer, or guided meditation videos, and audio files. Although these might help in the beginning to get into the rhythm of the practice, ultimately I landed on practicing meditation in silence, whenever I can. I found that the less pressure I put on it, the more I kept it as part of my morning and evening routine.

How to properly meditate is up to you. From sitting, to lying down, repeating a mantra like Transcendental meditation teaches, to simply focusing on your breath, your practice can be as unique as you.

How do I stop the chatter? All I do is think.

Some people argue you need to meditate for at least half an hour since we waste the first ten minutes with mind chatter and the stresses of the daily life, and it is not until you get those things out of the way that you can truly focus.

What I like to do, and what I find works, is to write all your thoughts on a journal before you meditate. A simple notebook will suffice, but you can use ajournal with prompts if you find it hard to write, or if writing is not your favorite thing.

Once all the little open loops in your head are on paper, it is a lot easier to move past them when you close your eyes in silence.

Sit or lie down?

I usually meditate sitting down, because if I lay down, chances are I will fall asleep. Sleeping is a very important part of healing, but meditation has benefits of its own, which is why I try to separate the two, unless I am doing Yoga Nidra (Sleep Yoga, or NSDR) during the day, but in that case what I am trying to do is training my brain to fall asleep on command.

For how long should I meditate?

I used to set up a timer when I meditated. I experimented with 20 minutes, 12 minutes, 5 minutes, you name it. In all instances, I broke the meditation to gaze over my phone and look at how much time I had left. Every time I do this, it was like having to start over again from zero. So now I have done away with any and all distractions, I just sit there in silence and focus on my breath.

I become hyper focused on my breath, and it becomes harder to breathe.

How to breathe properly during meditation

It used to happen to me, too. I started breathing deeply, and then I never let go. It is an important part of the practice to settle your breath into a regular pattern. You never notice you are breathing during the day, consider that when meditating. What works is trying to not force it. When you exhale, do not immediately force yourself to inhale. But let your body do what it’s supposed to do. Periodically check on yourself. Loosen your stomach and chest. Let it go. Not all breaths need to be deep, that’s when your chest and back hurt, because you are forcing it. When you’re doing it right, it does not feel uncomfortable at all, and I get lost in a sort of trance.

What is the use to learn how to properly meditate?

Once you get the hang of it, it is a tool you can summon anywhere and at any time. It will help you react better to things you will encounter in your daily life. You will remember the practice when you find a new ding in your car door, or your dog poops on the carpet, or no one buys your Etsy products. Like stoicism, meditation offers an aid to a good, collected life. One where you live well by doing less, better.

Every second, ask yourself: What is the purpose of this moment?

You are sitting in front of your computer, typing away trying to curb the fierceness of your thoughts, when an urge to look up an online sale comes along. And you step on the breaks of a 100 mile per hour train to full stop to skip to the next open tab and look for a few seconds. When you cannot find the item you want quick enough, you jump back to the previous tab, but the train is not there anymore. It exploded, and it took the tracks with it. And you try to go back to the online store tab but you realize you don’t even really need the item, so you go to where all days go to die: Social Media.

No matter how scrambled your brain is, or how scattered your ideas, you can always head back to the purgatory that is social media and scroll your day away and feel, if not slightly accomplished, at least normal.

May I suggest an alternative?

With everything you do, ask yourself “what is the purpose of being here?” In this moment, why did I set out to do? When you opened the lid of your laptop, what was the plan? What compelled you to do it? Were you aiming for a productive morning of writing before you ended up on an online store and then on social media? Make it your life’s mission to protect that purpose at all costs. No one is going to tell you what to do. Every truly difficult endeavor is yours only to traverse. There are no parents, teachers or bosses pointing you in the right direction. You have to point yourself, to force yourself to walk the way.

Find some tips on productivity elsewhere on my blog. But always try to only keep at hand the tools necessary to complete the task you set out to do, and nothing else. One thing at a time is way better for productivity than all at once. There is no such thing as multiple priorities running in parallel. The word priority is derived from the Latin prioritas, meaning “first in rank, order, or dignity.” The word itself contradicts having multiple priorities. There can only be one priority.

Do less, better.

If I was a person who ONLY made the right decision, what decision would I make right now? This is a question that should take permanent residence in your mind. It will help you make better decisions.

When working out, there are a few ways to perform the same exercise routine. There is the light weight high repetition count, there is a high weight low repetition count, and then there is the no weight version. All of them have something in common: they allow you to pick and choose your difficulty level so you do not stop moving. Ever.

Apply this to all other areas of your life and watch your day blossom, and never remain stagnant. Wether you are in front of your computer, stuck on a complicated problem, or frozen in traffic, there is always something you can do to keep your brain or your physical being in motion. Get up from your desk and sweep the kitchen floor. Or go to the garage and reorganize it. Do something simple that you have been putting off. Those things claw at your attention and hinder your development in other areas of your life, it doesn’t matter how small a task it is.

When in traffic, why listen to the same songs you have been listening to for decades? Either go check out that album you have been meaning to check out, or listen to an interesting podcast. You are what your thoughts are, they say, so feed your brain with what you want to become. In order to make better decisions, you have to have better thoughts. The only way to have better thoughts is to feed your brain and body better food.

Si what if your neighbors or friends do this or that? Do you take advice from financially or mentally broke people? You know better.

Ask yourself this simple question: “If I was a person who ONLY made the right decision, what decision would I make right now?”, and then do it.

Fix your morning routine. Consider keeping a journal, and reflect upon these questions.

Living in the moment is as important as looking forward to the next thing. How often an upcoming show, concert, or even a new episode of a beloved show have kept your mood up for an entire day or weeks?

Give yourself mini rewards to look forward to in the future to get through the tough parts of your day.

Do you want to write 500 words? Think about the video games or the movie you’ll be able to watch after you get that done. Don’t know how you’ll get up early to work out? Think about the delicious and healthy breakfast you’ll cook and eat after you’re done, and picture yourself drinking coffee or tea feeling like a champion.

Invent rewards throughout the day to get you through to the next goal post. Don’t wait until a good thing comes along at a distance, create them and place them carefully in your path to greatness.

This is a list of productivity and reward recommendations (as you can probably guess from the title). I use these as motivation to be productive, or as a trophy after completing my list of actionable steps for the day.

I will try to keep this list updated as I find new things. And I will try my best to only add things you probably have not heard of before.

Tv Shows

Halt and Catch Fire – (on Netflix as of 2021) – About the successes and tribulations of a group of self starters, entrepreneurs and engineers. Really good acting, cast, and writing.

ZeroZeroZero – on Amazon Prime – I usually don’t like drug crime dramas, but this one is so well done I’m enjoying every second of it.

Movies

Captain Fantastic (Netflix)

Music

Productivity playlist on Spotify – it is the first result I got when I typed in “productivity playlist” on the search on Spotify. It is great. It puts me in the zone immediately

Concentration Music – first result in either Spotify or Youtube(the thumbnail has a blue man). It really turns your neurons on. It really works if you listen with headphones.
